Facebook launches 'Marketplace', Taking on eBay

Facebook has announced more new features to the users in US..

Facebook is revamping portions of its mobile app and website to make it easier to get recommendations from friends and interact directly with businesses, without leaving the social network. The central changes can be found in the company's Pages and Events tools, which both help Facebook act as a social nexus for the site's users to stay in the know about what's going on in their community and what their friends are into. Facebook will let poll friends for recommendations on places to see, restaurants to try, and businesses that can be trusted. Those recommendations then get placed on a map, with links to those businesses individual pages and options to even purchase items direct from the companies themselves.

People often rely on Amazon reviews when trying to discover which product to buy. They also rely on Google's search prowess to point them in the right direction for more general knowledge questions. Facebook, on the other hand, thinks it can leverage the power of the people whose opinions you value, to urge you to ask them for help instead of relying on strangers or algorithmic tools. It's a subtle but powerful way to keep people using Facebook's app over the mobile web, which is the favored platform of Google. Both companies have made significant efforts of late to promote their respective platforms, each of which earns ad revenue based on how many eyeballs it attracts. If Facebook can change the behavior of smartphone owners — by giving them a better app-based alternative to a standard Google search — it will in turn bolster its business.

Another line of thought is:

Facebook may be looking to imitate the successes of messaging apps like China’s WeChat and Japan’s Line, which allow millions to book doctors’ appointments, order dinner, watch videos, chat with their friends, and order goods all through one digital hub. Today’s announcements, paired with Facebook’s recent moves, such as the integration of Uber and other brands into its Messenger chat app and a developer platform that allows any company to create a chat bot, suggest that the company is also trying to position itself as a hub that users never leave, and through which all communication and commercial transactions flow.

Get More Out of Your Local Business Interactions on Facebook
We’re introducing some new ways for people to take action faster once they’ve found something they want to do or a place they want to go.
  • Order food: You can now order food from restaurants directly from their Facebook Pages. Simply click “Start Order” on any restaurant’s Facebook Page that uses Delivery.com or Slice.
  • Request an appointment: For local businesses that require you to book an appointment, such as spas and salons, you can now request a time via the business’ Facebook Page and view their entire slate of services and offerings. They’ll then get back to you on Messenger to confirm your appointment.
  • Get a quote: Some local business Pages will now have a “Get Quote” button at the top that lets you easily and quickly request a quote from the business.
  • Get tickets to movies and events: For many new movies this fall, you can buy movie tickets straight from their Facebook Pages via Fandango. In partnership with Ticketmaster and Eventbrite, we’re also making it possible for people to get tickets to other events — free or paid — directly from the event page on Facebook.
